Keeping Google’s Infrastructure Alive

An interview with a Google data center operator talks about some of the practices that are implemented when dealing with outages. Google has mentioned previously that they have been implementing technology to keep a user’s information localized for lower latency. Extra efficiencies such as localization can make automated failover routing much more complex to implement. Last month’s Euro Gmail outage was said to be caused by a ripple effect during an attempted recovery.
